LaCharite eyes new brewery

Veteran Maine brewmaster Michael LaCharite is hoping to get back into commercial beer-making by transforming a former seafood business in Durham into a brewery specializing in high-quality specialty beers.

LaCharite, who started Casco Bay Brewing Co. in 1994, then sold it, and later went on to help Baxter Brewing Co. in Lewiston as its first brewmaster, recently presented his plans for Katahdin Beers to the Durham Planning Board. The board has scheduled his permit application for further discussion and a possible vote for its Sept. 5 meeting, according to the Tri-Town Weekly.

LaCharite said he hopes to have all of his local approvals and state and federal licenses in place soon so he can begin operations by the end of this year. He told the weekly newspaper he intends to keep the business very small, turn out a Belgian-style specialty beer and employ no more than three or four employees.
