Lawmakers mull statewide building code

A legislative committee will hold a public hearing tomorrow on a uniform statewide building code, which supporters say will make it easier for contractors that work in multiple towns.

Rep. Nancy Smith (D-Monmouth) sponsored the bill, LD 2257, spurred in part by a recommendation in the Brookings Institution's 2006 report on Maine's economy. The Legislature's Business, Research and Economic Development Committee will hold the public hearing tomorrow afternoon.

Currently, Maine cities and towns can develop their own building codes, making the permitting process confusing for developers and contractors who work in multiple towns, the report said.
