Rumford mill recalls employees

Some employees laid off last month from the NewPage mill in Rumford are being called back to work.

Eight of 23 people laid off when the mill shut down its No. 11 paper machine have been called back, and others likely will be recalled in the coming weeks, mill spokesman Tony Lyons told the Sun Journal in Lewiston. Those called back will fill the positions of eight employees who chose to accept the mill's early retirement package.

The No. 11 machine, the mill's oldest, was shut down permanently as part of an integration process when Ohio-based NewPage bought the North-American holdings of Finland-based Stora Enso, according to the paper.
