Lawmakers pass committee merger

Following a compromise reached by the Rules Committee, the state Legislature Friday voted to merge the labor committee with the Business, Research and Economic Development Committee.

The new committee will be known as the Labor, Commerce, Research and Economic Development Committee, the new group will focus on issues ranging from workers' compensation to consumer protection, according to the Bangor Daily News. Lawmakers gave the move their unanimous support, despite previous contention from organized labor and some Democrats, who said scrapping the labor committee would minimize labor issues. The Rules Committee last week backed the merger, which includes shifting management of some issues from the labor and BRED committees to other committees, including oversight of the Maine State Retirement System, which will be handled by the Appropriations and Financial Affairs Committee, according to the paper.

Senate Republican leaders pitched creating one committee to focus on labor and business issues earlier this month.
