Lawmakers wrap up session

The 125th Maine Legislature wrapped up its first session yesterday, three weeks after its initial adjournment date of June 8.

Gov. Paul LePage thanked lawmakers for their work over the past six months, singling out health insurance reform, regulatory reform, and lower income taxes and state pension costs, according to The Associated Press. However, he also told lawmakers to prepare for more work in the next session, and reiterated his stance on eliminating rules that allow unions to collect "fair share" fees from non-union employees.

In its last days, the Legislature passed a bill allowing Hollywood Slots to add table games, provided voters in Penobscot County sign off on the measure; approved legislation to legalize some fireworks in Maine; and approved a bill to allow the creation of 10 publicly funded charter schools, according to the Bangor Daily News.
