July 4th traffic expected to slide

Holiday weekend traffic on the Maine Turnpike is expected to be down, according to a report from a University of Southern Maine group.

The Maine Center for Business & Economic Research is predicting a 5.4% drop in traffic today through Monday at the York toll plaza, or about 19,000 fewer vehicles than last year, The Associated Press reported. The center's Charles Colgan attributed the expected decline to gas prices, which are still high despite a recent drop. He predicted that traffic levels will rise later in the season if gas prices continue to fall.

Last year, Fourth of July weekend traffic jumped 9% over 2009, thanks to hot weather and stable gas prices.
