The U.S. District Court has dismissed a lawsuit brought against Aroostook County and Northern Maine Development Commission, alleging that the former executive director of a local workforce investment board was illegally fired because of a disability and because she blew the whistle on alleged illegal activity in the workplace.
The Bangor Daily News reported that the Feb. 15 summary judgment dismissed the lawsuit brought forth in 2011 by Dena Winslow, the former executive director of the Local Workforce Investment Board for Aroostook and Washington counties.
Winslow had requested a jury trial and wanted compensation for damages, back pay, reinstatement and-or front pay and other legal fees as a part of the lawsuit.
The court found that Winslow failed to prove her termination came as a result of persistent spinal problems and that her reports of federal violations at the Local Workforce Investment Board did not qualify for whistleblower protection under state law.
The decision puts an end to the lawsuit unless Winslow decides to appeal the ruling.
