Lawsuits target secretary of state

A Hallowell resident has filed a lawsuit against Maine's secretary of state challenging his certification of a petition to repeal a recent tax reform law.

Charles Johnson III filed the suit against Matt Dunlap on Tuesday, alleging he certified signatures on a people's veto petition that should have been invalidated, according to the Kennebec Journal. Johnson's lawyer, John Paterson of Berstein Shur in Portland, said he found invalid signatures among those verified, including one from a deceased person and others gathered by people who are not registered Maine voters. Dunlap ruled that Still Fed Up With Taxes, the group pushing for the people's veto, gathered 56,107 valid signatures, 1,020 signatures above the number required to put a people's veto on the ballot. Paterson told the paper at least that many signatures, if not more, should have been discounted.

Dunlap also faces a second lawsuit from Maine Republican Party Chairman Charlie Webster claiming that since Dunlap missed the deadline to certify the signatures, the tax reform appeal shouldn't stand.
