Layoff assistance starts for Verso millworkers

Illustration / Matt Selva Verso announced last month that about 190 employees will be laid off at the Androscoggin Mill in Jay. A Maine Department of Labor Rapid Response Team is now helping those workers who are scheduled to be laid off.

A Maine Department of Labor Rapid Response Team recently started holding sessions for workers scheduled to be laid off at Verso’s Androscoggin Mill in Jay.

Approximately 190 employees are scheduled to be laid off due to the company’s plans to temporarily idle the mill's No. 3 paper machine, a digester and a recovery boiler that support the machine in the first quarter of 2017.

The DOL team is assisting those workers with unemployment insurance, health options and job search resources, the Sun Journal reported.

The expected layoff dates are between Jan. 12 and 26, but Julie Rabinowitz, DOL director of policy, operations and communication, told the paper via an email Friday, “The mill is being cooperative in letting DOL staff do the sessions onsite.”
