With city views at stake, Portland’s Historic Preservation Board is asking for up to 12 planned townhouses to be removed from the proposed redevelopment of 58 Fore St., which was detailed publicly in July.
The removal of nine to 12 units atop two historic buildings was recommended by the preservation board during a recent meeting about the redevelopment of 10 acres on Portland’s eastern waterfront, according to the Portland Press Herald. The reason given was preserving public views of the land, which contains a former railroad foundry. The views have been center to some neighborhood discord about the development.
James Brady, a principal of the CPB2 group that is developing the property, said he was “saddened” by the recommendation and told the newspaper he believes the view corridors included in the plan provide sufficient visual access.
“We’re in a city that desperately needs housing and every time you turn around there’s a reason housing isn’t getting built,” said Brady, who originally proposed 17 duplexes within the affected area.
He added that he hopes the historic board and the city planning board will be open to future discussions about the units, as revenue from them is to be used to rehabilitate the site’s historic buildings.
