Legal battle continues over natural gas contract

Maine Natural Gas is striking back at a legal challenge to the state contract it received to build a natural gas pipeline between Augusta and other communities within the Kennebec Valley.

The $19.9 million contract was initially accepted but then rescinded in September after an appeal by rival Summit Natural Gas that claimed the terms of the state's request for proposals were unclear and that the submitting companies' proposals were not scored fairly.

The Kennebec Journal reported that Maine Natural Gas has responded to that appeal with a lawsuit filed in Kennebec County Superior Court alleging that Summit missed, by one day, a 15-day deadline to file an appeal to the contract award.

The Maine Natural Gas lawsuit asks the court to reinstate its decision to award the project to Maine Natural Gas and have the state's Bureau of General Services determine whether an appeal hearing should have been held.
