Legislative recounts leave results unchanged
Recounts in 12 narrowly won Maine House and Senate races did not overturn any of the contests, finalizing each party's head count in the next Legislature.
A total of 10 House seats were contested through recounts and two Senate races were also challenged, some by margins as narrow as four and five votes, according to tallies from the Maine Secretary of State's Office.
The Bangor Daily News reported that the House Democrats will hold control with 89 seats; four Independent members are expected to often vote with them. Republicans will hold 58 seats.
In the Senate, Democrats will hold 19 seats and Republicans will control 15 seats, a reversal of the past two years.
In the House, Republicans have picked Rep. Kenneth Fredette of Newport as the minority leader and Rep. Alexander Willette of Mapleton as assistant minority leader.
The remaining party leaders on both sides of the aisle were decided earlier this month.
