Legislators target tax scofflaws

The Legislature's Appropriations Committee is considering tactics to secure $250 million owed in uncollected taxes, according to Capital News Service. Calling it an issue of fairness, lawmakers are looking at ways to increase the percentage of collections on owed taxes, including whether to hire more agents.

Sales taxes collected but not submitted by 20,000 businesses to the state total just under $44 million. Corporate income taxes owed by 994 corporations total $20.4 million. Additionally, as of Jan. 31, uncollected income taxes totaled $153.7 million owed by 57,144 taxpayers.

There also is a problem with businesses not paying the income tax they have withheld from their employees, according to the news service. Maine Revenue Services lists 10,361 employers that owe just over $16 million.
