NewPage to idle Rumford mill

NewPage Corp. will temporarily shut down its mill in Rumford later this month, just weeks after announcing 130 layoffs.

Company officials cited a weak coated paper market as the reason for the closure, planned for March 22-29, the Sun Journal reported. Most of the mill's remaining 860 employees will be out of work, though some critical salaried and hourly workers will remain on site.

Thirty salaried employees already have left their jobs at the mill and about 100 hourly workers are being laid off as part of the overall reductions, the result of Miamisburg, Ohio-based NewPage's goal to cut 150,000 tons of product during the first quarter of 2009.
