Legislature returns to short-term budget trimming

The Legislature will resume deliberations on an emergency budget package today to deal with a nearly $88 million gap in the state's Medicaid budget and a $35.5 million revenue shortfall.

MaineToday Media reported that the Legislature adjourned Thursday without a decision as Democrats and Republicans continued fighting over issues related to funding for charter schools and a $10.1 million cap on General Assistance payments to municipalities.

Gov. Paul LePage's supplemental budget proposal outlines $12.6 million in cuts to conventional K-12 schools and makes no cuts to the state's two charter schools, which are expected to begin operating this fall.

Democrats have proposed making similar cuts to charter schools and oppose setting a cap to General Assistance spending.

LePage spokeswoman Adrienne Bennett told the media company that she didn't know whether the governor would veto a budget plan that includes charter school cuts, but Republican lawmakers have said they will work to uphold a veto if those cuts are included in the budget.
