Legislature upholds three LePage vetoes
Lawmakers yesterday upheld three of Gov. Paul LePage's four vetoes, allowing a measure to increase salaries for teachers who earn certification to advance. The Senate voted to override LePage's veto of a $20 million R&D bond, but a House vote failed to get a two-thirds majority.
The Senate voted 29-6 to override LePage's veto of the R&D bond bill, but the House voted 88-53 to override it, short of the two-thirds majority required, according to the Bangor Daily News. The bond proposal was for R&D support in aquaculture, agriculture, composites, forest technology and renewable energy via the Maine Technology Institute. When he vetoed the proposal, LePage said the Legislature should reduce other spending and fund R&D through the general fund if it indeed is a priority. He let four other bond proposals advance to voters without his signature.

The Legislature sustained LePage's veto of a bill that would have allowed fraternal and veterans organizations to have slot machines, as well as a bill to allow the state Governmental Facilities Authority to borrow money for courts without voter approval.
