LePage 2.0: Eliminate Maine's income tax

Gov. Paul LePage has staked out the elimination of income tax in Maine as a top goal of his administration if he is re-elected next year.

The Portland Press Herald reported that LePage presented his goal Monday during a press event featuring Missouri lobbyist Tavis Brown, who argued that eliminating Maine's income tax would encourage economic growth.

Brown estimates Maine has lost nearly $790 million to Florida, Nevada and Tennessee, where there are no taxes on personal income.

LePage, however, says he remains opposed to a bipartisan tax reform proposal that would reduce the state's income tax to a flat 4% rate while raising sales taxes and eliminating existing tax exemptions.
