Governor-elect Paul LePage has named 10 people to his budget advisory group, which will tackle an estimated $1.2 billion budget gap.
Current legislators make up half the group, which will be led by Rep. Sawin Millett, R-Waterford, the ranking Republican on the Legislature's Appropriations and Financial Affairs Committee, according to the Kennebec Journal. The other lawmakers are: Rep. John Robinson, R-Raymond; Rep. Sally Lewin, R-Eliot; Sen. Peter Mills, R-Cornville; and Rep. Ken Fletcher, R-Winslow. Tarren Bragdon, executive director of the Maine Heritage Policy Center and a member of LePage's transition team, will also serve on the budget team, as well as Democrat Ryan Low, Gov. John Baldacci's former finance commissioner who now works as chief financial officer at the University of Maine in Farmington. Former Democratic legislator George Kerr, Mary Mayhew, former vice president of the Maine Hospital Association, and Michael Tyler, principal of health care consulting firm Sandy River II, round out the 10-member group.
At an announcement yesterday, LePage said the team would examine underperforming programs to balance the budget, which would likely include cutting the state's Dirigo Health program and other state government cuts. The budget, due to the new Legislature Feb. 11, would also include Medicaid payments owed to Maine hospitals and funds committed to the state retirement system.
