Central Maine Healthcare cuts 20 jobs

About 20 jobs at Central Maine Healthcare have been eliminated, after the Lewiston-based organization tapped an outside firm to handle its medical transcription duties.

Central Maine Healthcare spokesman Chuck Gill said that all 20 people were offered jobs with Pennsylvania-based Precyse Solutions, an offer 10 employees accepted, according to the Sun Journal. The other 10 opted to retire or seek other alternatives, Gill said in a statement. Outsourcing the work is less expensive and eliminates the health care organization's need to update its outdated technology.

The parent organization of Central Maine Medical Center has undertaken a number of cost-cutting measures this year to shave $11 million from its budget, including eliminating raises and reducing vacation time for its 3,200 employees in July and laying off 35 workers and cutting administrator pay in September.
