LePage puts the brakes on $19M bus refurbishment
Gov. Paul LePage has halted a contract executed by the Maine Military Authority following the discovery that the $19 million agreement to refurbish buses for the Boston-area transit system was underbid, leading to added taxpayer costs and jeopardizing Aroostook County jobs.
According to the governor’s office, in 2014, the Maine Military Authority won the multimillion contract to refurbish the commuter busses for the MBTA to curb job losses at the Limestone-based Loring Development Authority, which employs over 50.
“While we continue to work toward reducing costs as we renegotiate the contract terms, we must be reassured about the continuation of this contract as we move forward. We cannot in good faith create a financial burden to taxpayers and we will work to protect these good jobs for Mainers,” Brigadier General Douglas A. Farnham, who serves as adjutant general of the Maine National Guard, as well as commissioner for the Department of Defense, said in a statement. “We intend to personally discuss the issue with MMA staff and Massachusetts officials and act appropriately.”
LePage’s office said more details are likely to surface about the underbid contract in the coming weeks.
