LePage sends letter of support for Keystone pipeline

Gov. Paul LePage has endorsed construction of the controversial Keystone pipeline project, which would carry oil from the Canadian border to Steele City, Neb.

The Bangor Daily News reported the governor endorsed the project in a March 3 letter to Secretary of State John Kerry. The pipeline, which requires permitting approval from President Obama, has received criticism for posing environmental risks.

In his letter, LePage wrote that denial of the project could harm trade relationships with Canada. Uncertainty in the relationship with Maine’s largest trade partner, he wrote, could damage the state’s economy.

Environmentalists in Maine said the letter raised concerns about LePage’s stance on importing tar sands oil through Maine, a topic on which he has not taken a public position.
