LePage vetoes Medicaid expansion, hospital debt bill

Gov. Paul LePage on Thursday quickly vetoed a bill tying payment of the state's hospital debt to the expansion of Medicaid.

In his veto letter, LePage reiterated his view that the two issues should remain separate. The veto came just before LePage announced he has moved out of his State House office. LePage decided on the move after Democratic leaders objected to his placement of a television outside his office door with the message, "What's the Hold Up?" and a counter ticking off the 133 days, as of Thursday, since he introduced a plan to pay the state's hospital debt. That plan would borrow against projected revenues from renegotiating the state's wholesale liquor distribution contract.

Democratic leaders raised objections to the placement of the television outside of his office, saying the common space in the State House is not the appropriate place to make a political statement.
