LePage wants lawmakers back in August for bonds

Gov. Paul LePage wants legislators to return to Augusta this month to vote on a transportation bond package he says is vital to get on a ballot this November.

The call is a challenge to Democratic lawmakers, who said they will consider a number of different bond proposals when they reconvene in September to confirm political appointments, according to the Portland Press Herald.

Democrats said consideration of those bonds in September would prepare them for a June ballot.

LePage says the $100 million bond package, which includes a rail connection for Icelandic shipping company Eimskip’s waterfront cargo operation in Portland, needs to move ahead soon.

Company officials said they chose to relocate their U.S. headquarters to Maine after receiving assurances that the nearby Pan Am railway tracks would be extended around 1,500 feet to make a direct connection with the International Marine Terminal, where the company’s ships dock.
