The Lewiston City Council, which in June began considering the creation of an offshoot dedicated exclusively to shaping the housing policies of Maine’s second-most populous city, is now looking to staff the committee.
Mayor Kristen Cloutier invited applications for the newly-formed Housing Committee, to be comprised of 12 volunteers, in a news release last week. Bids are due Friday, Sept. 27.
The city said the purpose of the committee is to advise the council on a range of issues, with the goal of ensuring quality and safety of housing stock, expanding diversity in the types of residences, and providing good housing options for residents at every socioeconomic level.
All committee members must be Lewiston residents, unless a resident cannot be found to fill a specific position on the group, according to the release.
The committee will include:
City Council members will occupy the remaining three seats on the committee.
The council earlier this month passed an ordinance establishing the Housing Committee. Lewiston is only the third city in Maine with such a municipal group; the Portland City Council has long had one, and South Portland formed one earlier this year.
For more information, contact the Lewiston city clerk at 207-513-3124. Completed applications must be submitted to the clerk's office in Lewiston City Hall, 27 Pine St., by 4 p.m. on Friday.
