Lighthouse goes to Windham surgeon
A neurosurgeon from Windham has won the auction for a Casco Bay lighthouse with a final bid of $190,000.
A spokeswoman from the U.S. General Services Administration, which conducted the online auction, confirmed that Dr. Jeffrey Florman yesterday submitted the winning bid for the Ram Island Ledge Lighthouse off the coast of Cape Elizabeth, according to the Portland Press Herald. However, Florman did not confirm he was the winner, though he had told the paper previously that he had made bids on the lighthouse. The auction, originally slated to end Sept. 2, stretched on as bidders, including Portland real estate developer Arthur Girard, continued to submit high bids. Girard and Florman had considered collaborating to outbid others, but ended their bidding war with a coin toss, which Florman won. A social entrepreneur in Brunswick, Bob Muller, launched a crowd-sourcing effort to raise funds, with plans to sell membership to an online community that could remotely access the lighthouse via streaming audio and video. All three men expressed a desire to keep the lighthouse under local ownership.
The final sale price makes Ram Island Ledge Lighthouse one of the most expensive lighthouse deals in the Northeast. Other lighthouses have sold for between $70,000 and $100,000. Florman will receive official notice that he won the bid in a few days, and then will have 60 days to close the sale, according to the paper.
