Lincoln sees upswing in new businesses
Lincoln is seeing an upswing in businesses opening, relocating or working on West Broadway, according to the Bangor Daily News, which noted the new businesses could give the town a much-needed economic boost.
Town officials and the Maine Department of Transportation are considering a proposal to widen West Broadway to attract more businesses, the newspaper quoted Ruth Birtz, the town’s economic development coordinator, as saying.
The newspaper also reported the increased business activity comes as Lincoln town officials prepare for a major cut in next year’s budget. That $645,000 cut is in reaction to Lincoln Paper and Tissue mill laying off 200 employees last December.
Heat Pumps Unlimited opened on West Broadway, and Mainely Log moved to a building near West Broadway and River Road near where SW Collins hardware is due to open this fall. The hardware store and a Dunkin’ Donuts store near Hannaford supermarket are now under construction.
In addition, contractors are installing a $7.5 million natural gas pipeline along River Road that will eventually run to Lincoln Paper and Tissue on Katahdin Avenue.
