A Kids’ Insulated Water Bottle sold by L.L.Bean is under a product safety recall because some of the bottle bottoms were sealed using a lead solder bead, according to the company’s website.
The recall No. 16-227 was issued July 19 by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. The product is manufactured in China for Spokane, Wash.-based GSI Outdoors Inc.
About 6,700 units are affected, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission. The bottles are sold exclusively at L.L.Bean and involve five styles of kids’ insulated water bottles with printed graphics. The 13.5-ounce bottle prints are: Dino Bones, Flower Power, Orange Grid Camo, Purple Tie Dye Butterfly and Robo Shark.
They were sold exclusively at L.L.Bean retail stores, online at www.llbean.com and in the L.L.Bean catalogues from July 2015 through May 2016 for about $20.
According to L.L.Bean, the problem with the bottles, with the Item ID 297684, was found during routine testing by GSI Outdoors. The tests found a positive reading for lead on the outside bottom of the bottle where the outer vacuum layer is sealed. The ID is printed on a sticker on the bottom of the bottle along with “PO#844” and “BB2D2-LLB-R45-0413.”
“It was determined that some of the water bottles provided to L.L.Bean were erroneously sealed on the bottom with a solder bead containing lead instead of the lead-free solder bead originally specified,” the warning on L.L.Bean’s website to consumers said. “This could potentially expose the user of the bottle to the lead seal on the outside bottom of the water bottle.” The posting recommends stopping use of the water bottle immediately and returning it to L.L.Bean. Consumers can call 1-800-555-9717 for more information.
