Lobster catch expected to top 100M pounds
Preliminary figures show Maine lobstermen caught more than 100 million pounds in 2011, which would be the first time the catch has topped 100 million if those numbers are confirmed.
The expected catch for 2011 surpasses 2010’s record haul of 94.7 million pounds, worth more than $313 million, according to The Associated Press. There was no word on a value of 2011’s catch. Department of Marine Resources Commissioner Patrick Keliher said in a press release that final figures for 2011 will be released in late February in advance of the annual Maine Fishermen’s Forum, which will be held March 1-3.
He told The AP that the fishery expects to see strong landings for the next several years based on the number of juvenile lobster reported. David Cousens, president of the Maine Lobstermen’s Association, said lobstermen are still receiving lower prices for their catch than what they earned in 2006, and expenses have increased as prices for diesel fuel and equipment have risen.
