Lobster union to close on $4 million purchase of Trenton pound

The Maine Lobstering Union Local 207 is about to complete the first phase of a three-part plan for a statewide buying cooperative with the $4 million purchase of the Trenton Bridge Lobster Pound.

The Mount Desert Islander reported that Local 207 President Rocky Alley planned to complete the purchase of the wholesale business this week. Alley told the paper the operation will start buying lobsters from Downeast fishermen the following day. The local is affiliated with the Machinists union.

Funds for the transaction include loans from nine union districts as well as the Kansas City, Kansas-based Bank of Labor, the paper reported. Next steps include expanding buying operations in the Rockland and Boothbay Harbor region, then southern Maine.

“We want to be able to include everybody in the state of Maine by the end of the year,” Alley said.

Unlike other fishery coops, the union operations will buy from non-members as well as members, the paper reported.
