Calais forms TIF district to boost growth
The Calais City Council has approved a tax increment financing district that includes much of the downtown as well as other lots to spur economic development.
The Quoddy Tides reported that the long-awaited TIF will allow new businesses or those planning an expansion within the TIF district to apply for tax breaks while enabling the city to shelter funds earmarked for economic development.
"Calais has talked about this for many years," the paper reported of Mayor Billy Howard remarks during the council’s meeting. "It really gives us another toolbox of options."
