The owner of the Topsham Fair Mall isn’t letting the news of a Best Buy location leaving the retail complex darken his day. Instead, he is using the upcoming closure as a chance to continue his goal of providing prime retail real estate to businesses with Maine connections.
The Forecaster spoke to John Larson, the owner of the Topsham Fair Mall, about his hopes of attracting local businesses to the mall. According to Larson, over 70% of the businesses at the complex have their roots in Maine.
“What we’ve tried to do, by and large I think fairly successfully, is [to make] a conscious effort to try to provide a home for Maine-based or Maine-owned companies,” Larson told The Forecaster.
Larson added that some owners of retail complexes shy away from local businesses, as national companies may provide more of a sense of economic stability than smaller, local businesses.
“There’s nothing wrong with that,” Larson told The Forecaster. “Oftentimes the local firm loses out because they don’t quite have the same — in the view of many people — creditworthiness as some of these larger national firms.”
