After nearly two years of being held in receivership, new leaders are expected to take over operations of Bath Iron Works' beleaguered union as early as next month.
Local S6, the shipyard's largest union, could by February fall under the control of new officers that were elected in October, according to The Times Record. In 2008, the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers suspended the union's then-leaders and took control of its operations following allegations of financial mismanagement and other infractions. John Carr, a spokesman for IAMAW, said the union is ready to be run locally. "We had to go in and clean up our own house. Now that it's up on its feet, we're ready to move on and let them go forward," he told the paper.
A legal battle between the four suspended officers and the IAMAW continues, however. An attorney representing the four officers said he continues to file lawsuits in state and federal courts, claiming defamation and illegal discipline on the part of the parent union. A federal judge last year ruled against the four officers and refused to overturn the trusteeship, but referred the claims of defamation to the state court.
