Local, federal groups criticize Plum Creek

As the Land Use Regulation Commission tallies comments collected on Plum Creek Timber Co.'s large-scale development plan in northern Maine, a number of local and federal groups have lodged criticisms against the plan.

Groups including the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife have complained that Plum Creek's plan would endanger such things as wildlife habitat and public wilderness access, according to the Portland Press Herald. Though those groups aren't against approving the plan and have credited Plum Creek for parts of its proposal, they have recommended scaling back some parts of the plan, the Press Herald said.

The comments were collected in August and are currently being reviewed by LURC officials. Public hearings on the project will begin Nov. 3 in Greenville.
