Kamasouptra, which has served up “steamy hot soup” in Portland for 12 years, is closing its doors for good.
Owners Drew Kinney, Mike Jerome, Sarah Haley and Joe Jerome are leaving the soup-specializing take-out business to seek “new adventures,” Kamasouptra said on social media Tuesday.
Kamasouptra’s space in the Portland Public Market will be occupied by a neighbor there, Yardie Ting, which offers Jamaican cuisine.
Kamasouptra has been a popular eatery with the downtown crowd over the years, and at one time operated branches in Freeport and the Maine Mall in South Portland. Menus have typically offered a changing variety of a dozen home-made soups, including vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free options.
Online, the business shared a little information about the owners' adventures.
Drew Kinney is now teaching culinary students in Utah. Mike Jerome is "bouncing between" his Brunswick restaurants: Flip Brunch Bar, Bolos Kitchen, Cantina & Candlepin and Fat Boy Drive In. Sarah Haley works with him.
But not all the owners are planning foodie futures: Joe Jerome is focusing on his Phippsburg-based fishing guide business, North East Salt Water, according to the post.
“We will miss all our customers that have supported us over the years,” it read. “Have a souper life!”
