Boothbay Harbor-area business owners are celebrating a strong start to the summer vacation season as low gas prices and the rise in popularity of “staycations” are causing more domestic visits to the coastal community.
The Boothbay Register spoke to a number of business owners including Chris Swanson, owner of the Boothbay Harbor-based Bayberry House Bed and Breakfast, who told the Register that bookings at the bed and breakfast started earlier than usual because of the mild winter.
Rocktide Motor Inn and Restaurant General Manager John Sullivan told the Register that another possible factor in the increase of domestic vacationing is weariness for travelers to go overseas.
“It’s a great time to travel in America,” Sullivan told the Register. “Gas prices are low and with so much instability overseas, it’s a safer alternative.”
