Lowe's store coming to Bangor

National retailer Lowe's is opening a store at the old Walmart site in Bangor by 2011.

Construction crews have begun demolishing the former Walmart store on Springer Drive to make way for a 137,000-square-foot Lowe's store, according to the Bangor Daily News. The home improvement retailer bought the property in late October or early November but would not confirm the purchase to Mainebiz. The purchase price was not disclosed, but construction of the new store, slated to start this spring, is expected to cost $18.5 million. Up to 175 full- and part-time jobs will be created. Plans also include a separate 35,000-square-foot retail building, but a tenant has not been named.

The new store would be Lowe's 11th location in Maine, and nearby Brewer is already home to a Lowe's store, which opened in April 2008.
