LP lays off 43 in New Limerick

Louisiana-Pacific Corp. on Wednesday laid off 43 employees from its plant in New Limerick, with the intention of bringing most of them back at some point.

Mary Cohn, spokeswoman for the Nashville, Tenn.-based building products supplier, attributed the layoffs to slow demand, according to the Bangor Daily News. "This is just temporary for most of the employees," she said. The layoffs affected 36 hourly and seven salaried employees, and were effective immediately on Wednesday. The plant employs 73 people.

Two years ago, LP invested more than $140 million in expanding and converting the New Limerick plant, which was established in 1982 as an oriented strand board mill, to laminated strand lumber production, according to the Daily News.
