Lubec working waterfront preserved

A former sardine factory in Lubec is being preserved for commercial fisheries use, thanks to more than $300,000 in funding from the Land for Maine's Future Program.

The $341,500 grant from the Working Waterfront Access Pilot Program will preserve the 1.47-acre site and its 500 feet of deepwater shorefront, 9,000-square-foot wharf and a 22,000-square-foot building complex for fisheries activities, according to the Maine Public Broadcasting Network. The property was purchased in 2006 by Victor Trafford, who renovated the factory building to include seasonal apartments and commercial fishery use.

Trafford received the grant in exchange for agreeing to keep the property accessible to commercial fishermen, and the funds will pay for wharf upgrades and refrigeration and processing space, according to MPBN.
