The town of Orrington has signed an agreement with St. Louis-based Mallinckrodt Inc. that requires the company to buy contaminated areas of the former HoltraChem site in order to facilitate cleanup.
Mallinckrodt, which owned the former chemical plant, will pay the town $175,000 by Dec. 31, 2013, for the contaminated areas of the 235-acre, town-owned site, according to the Bangor Daily News. Last month, the Maine Board of Environmental Protection issued a final ruling directing the company to remove two of the five landfills on the property, cap the other three landfills and perform other remediation tasks. Mallinckrodt appealed the ruling, asking to only clean up one landfill, but has agreed to move forward with cleanup efforts as the appeal is being heard.
The agreement signed by town and company officials also directs Mallinckrodt to pay for future monitoring and provide $1.5 million for redevelopment of the site, providing the town with three payments of $500,000 over the next three years, according to the paper.
