LURC approves Down East wind farm

The Land Use Regulation Commission yesterday voted 6-0 to grant preliminary approval to a proposed wind farm Down East that is expected to create enough electricity to power 27,500 Maine homes per year.

UPC Wind, based in Newton, Mass., and doing business as Evergreen Wind Power, wants to build 38 turbines on Stetson Mountain in northern Washington County. UPC Wind also is the developer of the Mars Hill wind project, currently Maine's only commercial wind farm.

LURC commissioners could vote in the coming months on two more large wind farms -- the Black Nubble and Kibby Mountain projects in western Maine, according to the Bangor Daily News.
