The Machias Bay Area Chamber of Commerce has found a new home at the newly renovated Station 1898, following 20 years of restoration at the historic train station.
“I’m really proud of the chamber of commerce,” chamber Executive Director Sharon Mack told the Bangor Daily News. “Many people did not think the day would come when this would be inhabitable again.”
The building, which dates to 1898 and was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1992, includes your standard chamber of commerce features like a large conference room and brochure racks. But the chamber was sure to include many signs of Station 1898’s past life — including large freight doors, historic artifacts and rooms with original flooring and ceilings, according to the BDN.
The site is on Route 1, which is also Machias’ main retail thoroughfare, across from Helen’s Restaurant.
The Maine Historic Preservation Commission assisted in the $30,000 restoration, far below the original estimation of $80,000, to make sure the station would maintain its historic significance.
“Everything is so perfect,” Mack told the BDN. “All of the trim for the windows had to be hand cut because all the windows were a different size.”
