Machiasport business reopens, rehires 40 workers

Cooke Aqauculture, a local producer of farm-raised Atlantic salmon among other kinds of fish, has reopened its facility in Machiasport.

The Bangor Daily News reported that the company’s 30,000-square-foot plant restarted operations on Tuesday after shutting down in March because harvesting scheduled were impacted by winter weather conditions. The company hired back 40 workers as a result.

“There is an increased demand for fresh Atlantic salmon raised in Maine,” Glenn Cooke, the company’s CEO, said. “We are committed to increasing our farming sites to meet production volume efficiencies and consumer demand. Our goal is to increase our sustainable salmon production and year-round employment in rural Maine.”

Cooke Aquaculture runs other operations in the United States, Canada, Chile, Spain and Scotland, with headquarters based in Blacks Harbour, New Brunswick.
