The state has given initial approval of a $398 million, 62-turbine wind farm in Bingham that has been proposed by a subsidiary of the Massachusetts-based First Wind.
The Bangor Daily News reported that the Maine Department of Environmental Protection gave preliminary approval to the 186-megawatt project in a draft order on Wednesday.
After a public comment session, the DEP will consider granting final approval. If successful, the venture would be largest-to-date wind project to receive approval from the state.
Chris O’Neil, president of anti-wind industry group Friends of Maine Mountains, told the BDN that his group is planning to oppose the project’s land-use permit, but he believes it will ultimately pass.
Paul Williamson, executive director of the Maine Ocean and Wind Industry Initiative, told the newspaper that project will boost the local economy. The project also is expected to increase the reliability of the region’s energy grid.
