The Aroostook County town of Madawaska is receiving $8 million in a combined federal grant and loan through the U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development.
The Bangor Daily News reported that the funding will help the town complete improvements to its wastewater treatment facility, including physical plant and collection system upgrades.
Roughly $1.9 million is from a USDA Rural Development water and waste disposal grant and $6.1 million through a low-interest loan. Madawaska qualified for a 2% rate due to its designation by the Maine Department of Environmental Protection as a “combined sewer overflow” community.
“This award is fantastic news and was imperative for the Town of Madawaska to continue our development plans to ensure adequate plant capacity at the Madawaska Pollution Control facility,” said Town Manager Ryan D. Pelletier.
BDN reported that USDA Rural Development Acting State Director Tommy R. Higgins said rural development funds will help “to ensure quality wastewater utilities for 1,223 residential and 118 commercial and governmental customers, as well as play a vital role in preserving the Saint John River.”
The newspaper reported that the $8 million being received by Madawaska will be used to complete final line improvements and other upgrades.
“This award was absolutely crucial for Madawaska to continue to provide quality public infrastructure improvements in the community,” said Suzie Paradis, the town’s economic and community development director.
