Madawaska's $50 million Land Port of Entry project gets started

U.S. General Services Administration The planned $49.9 million Madawaska Land Port of Entry building, whose construction is now underway.

The U.S. General Services Administration held a groundbreaking to mark the official start of the Madawaska Land Port of Entry, a border crossing that will connect Maine and Canada.

The project consists of the design and construction of a new land port of entry on 10.7 acres of U.S. land, replacing the existing entry port built in 1959. The new facility will offer improved high-end technology for the Canadian customs and border protection officer stationed there.

“These communities are connected with deep cultural heritages that go back to the founding of the country,” said Glenn Rotondo, GSA acting regional administrator and public building service regional commissioner. “People who live along the border depend on this deep, cross-border community engagement, often crossing through the ports on a daily basis for jobs, mutual aid and everyday life.”

The main building will house administration, training, processing support, enforcement support, agricultural inspection and other services.

A total of $71 million was appropriated by Congress for construction of a new land port of entry. The team awarded a $49.9 million contract for the design and construction to J&J Contractors Inc. of North Billerica, Mass.

Construction is expected to be completed in late 2023.
