Madison paper mill cutbacks has town looking for new funding

Another Maine paper mill has slowed production due to declining demand, a decision that puts a planned $3.2 million water district upgrade project in question.

Madison Paper Industries, which once operated 24 hours a day, seven days a week, has cut back weekly production to Tuesday through Saturday, according to The Portland Press Herald. The cutback in production is expected to last three to six months, with no layoffs expected.

The town of Madison has a $3.2 million water line replacement project planned for this spring. With 10% of the Anson-Madison Water District’s revenue coming from the paper mill, water district officials have said that new sources of revenue will need to be established, including a rate increase for customers.
