Maine Community Health asks to bypass fed's website

Maine Community Health Options, one of two companies selling health insurance on the federal exchange set up by the Affordable Care Act, wants to bypass the federal website that has had numerous technical problems since launching Oct. 1.

The Portland Press Herald reported the nonprofit insurer has asked if the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services will allow it to enroll people directly through its own website.

The company says that it has had nearly 7,000 people visit its enrollment page, where they spent an average of 12 to 14 minutes. Kevin Lewis, MCHO’s president, said that indicates a high level of customer interest in signing up for benefits through the company’s website.

The paper reported Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield, the other insurer selling plans on Maine’s exchange, also said it is receiving high call volume and Web traffic, but did not indicate whether it also hopes to sidestep the glitchy healthcare.gov.
