The Maine Credit Union League has announced a South Portland resident, West Coast native and experienced communicator is its new director of governmental affairs.
Krista Simonis will lead efforts to advance the League’s legislative, political and advocacy agendas in Augusta and Washington, D.C.
“We are thrilled to welcome Krista to both the League and the credit union movement,” said Robert Caverly, vice president of advocacy and outreach at MCUL. “She brings a wealth of experience with her to this new role and is joining our organization at a perfect time as we already are preparing for the next legislative session.”
Simonis began her political career with a lobbying firm in Sacramento, Calif., after earning her bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of California. Simonis later earned her master’s degree in communications studies from the University of Portland, Ore. She then joined the Oregon League of Conservation Voters, where she managed digital communications and organized a nonpartisan get-out-the-vote campaign.
“I am proud to join the Maine Credit Union League and build off my previous advocacy roles,” said Simonis. “I’m a big believer in the values of credit unions, so I’m excited to get to know the members of the League and help advance the credit union movement in Maine.”
When Simonis isn’t working, she's a regular performer with the improv comedy group, You Should Smile More. She also serves as a debate coach at Deering High School.
The Maine Credit Union League was founded in 1938. The mission of the nonprofit, professional trade association is to help the state's credit unions succeed and improve the financial lives of their members.
