Approximately 35 Maine doctors have reported that they are victims of tax fraud.
The Bangor Daily News reported that the doctors informed the Maine Medical Association that fraudulent tax returns were filed with their names and Social Security numbers. The Secret Service confirmed with BDN that it’s investigating the matter, though it’s currently unclear how the security breach happened.
Gordon Smith, executive vice president of Maine Medical Association, told BDN the tax fraud cases involving doctors are growing on a daily basis. He said over 100 similar cases have been reported in New Hampshire by the New Hampshire Medical Society. MedPage Today, a medical news site, reported there are hundreds of more cases in other states and Puerto Rico.
Smith recommends that Maine Medical Association members register for credit monitoring services to watch for fraudulent credit card activity. He added that doctors filing for extensions for their tax returns should be cautious when submitting them later this year.
Anyone who has experienced similar fraud activity should contact Smith at gsmith@mainemed.com or call 622-3374, ext. 212.
