The Maine Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Standards is hosting free workshops throughout the state to help employers navigate recent changes in wage and benefits requirements, including the process of hiring minors in the workforce.
The free wage and hour compliance assistance course covers wage and hour laws, including recent changes in minimum wage, overtime, youth employment, severance pay, equal pay, leave requirements (family medical leave, family sick leave, and domestic violence), and break requirements. It also addresses commonly asked labor-related questions and is designed for human resource or benefits professionals, accountants, business owners, managers, or payroll supervisors.

The Bureau of Labor Standards is also hosting free workshops to help employers understand the process of hiring minors in the workforce and to help parents and young workers understand Maine’s child labor laws. The workshops cover the basics of Maine’s child labor laws, such as how to apply for a work permit, the hourly restrictions for young workers, and hazards in the workplace.
This workshop is designed for human resource professionals, business owners, managers, parents and young workers.
“A first job is an important experience for young workers,” Department of Labor Commissioner Laura Fortman said. “These workshops will help businesses and young workers develop safe and sound work practices through a better understanding of Maine’s child labor laws. When businesses and workers have a clearer understanding of these laws, everyone benefits.”
